Hitachi Maxell Ltd will release an LED-based lantern that generates electricity by using water and salt Jan 25, 2017.

The lantern, “Mizusion,” emits light because magnesium alloy, oxygen in the air and salt water function as a negative electrode, positive electrode and electrolyte, respectively, and generate electricity.

The lantern can be stored for about 10 years. It is expected to be used as an emergency lamp at the time of disaster, power failure, etc as well as for leisure and outdoor activities.

The lantern has an illuminance of about 2,000lx. It can be continuously used for about 80 hours. And it can be repeatedly used by replacing magnesium alloy called “Power Bar.”

Eyeglasses Switch Between Near, Distance Vision

Mitsui Chemicals Inc developed eyeglasses that can switch between near and distance vision just by touching a sensor located near the hinge.

Various frames will be available for the glasses, “TouchFocus,” to meet the tastes of users in their 40s and older.

The eyeglasses were developed by combining Mitsui Chemicals’ “MR” highly-refractive glasses material and liquid crystal lens technologies. They use the company’s own lens made by stacking nine kinds of materials.

An electric circuit is embedded in their frame. When a touch sensor located near the hinge is touched, the TouchFocus is turned on and functions as glasses for far-sightedness.

Compared with commercially-available eyeglasses using lenses for both near- and far-sightedness, the new glasses provide a wider field of view for far-sightedness, and their rims are invisible, according to Mitsui Chemicals.

There is a detachable battery at the tip of the temple. It can be charged with a dedicated charger. The eyeglasses can be continuously used for about 10 hours. In a test participated in by employees of the company, the eyeglasses were used for about two weeks without being charged.

The TouchFocus is scheduled to be released in the spring of 2018. Though the price of the glasses has not been decided yet, it is expected to be higher than the prices of high-grade lenses for both near- and far-sightedness (¥100,000-150,000), Mitsui Chemicals said.

Yamaha Motor Shows Off 4-wheeled Series HEV

Yamaha Motor Co Ltd unveiled a concept model of a four-wheeled series hybrid vehicle (HEV) at Tokyo Motor Show 2017, which was open to the public from Oct 28 to Nov 5, 2017

The HEV, “MWC-4,” can be driven with an ordinary motor vehicle license in Japan. The company defines the vehicle as an “ultra-small mobility.”

The most distinguishing feature of the MWC-4 is that it is equipped with a “leaning multi-wheel (LMW) mechanism” and runs on four wheels. Compared with Yamaha Motor’s two-wheeled vehicles and “Tricity MW125” three-wheeled vehicle, the running stability of the MWC-4 can be more easily improved.

“The basic technologies (of the MWC-4) are based on those of our three-wheeled vehicles such as the Tricity, but we renovated the shape of the mechanism,” Yamaha Motor said.

The previous mechanism consists of “parallelogram links” and “cantilever telescopic suspensions.” There are two links arranged in parallel with each other. The center of each link is fixed to an auto body so that they form a rectangular shape when the vehicle is turning.

With this mechanism, the parallelogram links move the right and left suspensions to different positions when the vehicle is turning. The right and left wheels move in different directions (up and down) while being in parallel with each other. The vehicle leans its right and left wheels in a direction in which the driver moves the steering wheel.

This time, Yamaha Motor employed a double wishbone for both the front and rear wheels of the four-wheeled concept, in place of the rectangular link. The stability of the MWC-4 is high even when it is running at a high speed. The new system is being increasingly employed for four-wheeled sports cars.

The company made some original improvements to the concept car. For example, a shock absorber that absorbs impacts from the road surface is fixed while being separated from the vehicle frame.

Because the concept car is expected to be a series HEV, it stores electricity generated by an engine in a battery and runs on a motor. As an engine, Yamaha Motor plans to use a single-cylinder engine designed for two-wheeled vehicles, but the company said, “We are still considering engine performance and so forth.”

Yamaha Motor will probably use a new engine developed only for the MWC-4 because it eliminates the need to consider the compatibility with the transmission. The engine is transversely placed due to the limited installation space.　The piston moves in the width direction of the vehicle.

The engine is placed under the seats. A fuel tank for the engine and the engine for power generation are located in the front and rear areas, respectively, under the seats. For power generation, it is necessary to rotate the engine at a constant rotation speed. Therefore, a vibration absorbing material is used to reduce the vibration transmitted to the seats.

The battery is located under the floor. When the engine and the fuel tank are detached, the MWC-4 can be used as an electric vehicle (EV).

“In consideration of practical drive range, a series HEV is desirable at this point,” Yamaha Motor said. “We will consider making it an EV when battery technologies advance.”

While Yamaha Motor is considering developing the MWC-4 as an EV, it is easier for the company, which has a strength in engine technologies for two- and four-wheeled vehicles, to develop a series HEV.

The MWC-4 is a rear-wheel-drive car that uses a water-cooled in-wheel motor (IWM) attached to each of the right and left rear wheels. It does not need differential gears, enabling to reduce weight. By controlling the torque applied to the right and left wheels, it becomes easier to realize swift driving through torque vectoring, etc.

The series HEV is equipped with a linear steering that is similar to the steering of a two-wheeled vehicle, and the steering is used to control the front wheels. As in the case of two-wheeled vehicles, the body of the MWC-4 is tilted by weight shift.

The vehicle measures 2,680 (L) x 900 (W) x 1,480mm (H). Though it has two seats, the rear seat is supplementary, Yamaha Motor said.

Mazda ‘CX-8’ SUV Comes With 3 Rows of Seats

Mazda Motor Corp announced “CX-8,” a new SUV (sport utility vehicle) having three rows of seats.

The CX-8, which will be released Dec 14, 2017, in Japan, is the largest SUV that Mazda targets at the Japanese market. It has the same platform with the “CX-9” large-size SUV, which the company sells in North America and other overseas markets.

The price of the CX-8 ranges from ¥3,196,800 (approx US$28,406) to 4,190,400. Mazda plans to sell 1,200 units of the vehicle per month.

“In Japan, minivans are mainly used as cars for many passengers, but they are gradually being replaced with SUVs having two or three rows of seats,” Mazda President Masamichi Kogai said at a press conference that the company had Sept 14, 2017, in Tokyo. “We will trFront view of the mazda cx-8 suvy to create a new market that replaces the minivan market.”

“We will change the common sense that cars for many passengers are equal to ‘box cars,'” said a Mazda engineer who was responsible for the development of the CX-8.

The development of the CX-8 started in about 2014, he said. The development of the CX-9, a large-size SUV targeted at the North American market, was preceding that of the CX-8.

“We decided to consider an SUV that has three rows of seats and is suited for the Japanese market, by using the CX-9’s platform,” the engineer said.

In parallel with the development of the CX-8, Mazda decided to withdraw from the minivan market. The company finished selling the “MPV” in 2016 and will stop the production of “Biante” at the end of September 2017. And the production of the remaining minivan, “Premacy,” is scheduled to be finished within fiscal 2017.

“(In the aim of appealing to minivan owners,) we made improvements to the packaging so that all the passengers including those sitting on the third row of seats can feel comfortable,” the engineer said.

The third row of seats, which tends to be narrow in an SUV, was designed so that 170cm-tall adults can spend time without discomfort.

When the number of rows of seats is increased to three, the mass of the vehicle increases, affecting the traveling performance. The heaviest model of the CX-8 can be 1,900kg in weight. It is about 200kg heavier than Mazda’s “CX-5” five-seat SUV, whose width is the same as that of the CX-8 (1,840mm).

To comfortably drive the vehicle, whose weight is close to 2t, Mazda made changes to the “Skyactiv-D 2.2” 2.2L diesel engine. While the company has been using the engine since 2012, this time, it has made the largest improvement since the engine was introduced, the engineer said.

This time, the maximum output and maximum torque of the engine were increased by 11kW and 30N·m, respectively, to 140kW and 450N·m. This was achieved mainly by replacing its two-stage turbocharger with a new model. In addition, Mazda employed a technology to spray fine mist of a small amount of fuel at a high pressure in multiple steps.

Toyota Fully Remodels ‘Camry’ Sedan

Toyota Motor Corp has fully remodeled the “Camry” mid-size sedan for the first time in six years and released it July 10, 2017.

Toyota developed a platform and a power train for the new Camry by using “TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture),” which shares parts across segments. The new vehicle combines a 2.5L engine and the “THS II” hybrid system. Its fuel efficiency is 33.4km/L (approx 78.6mpg).

Toyota Remodels ‘Lexus NX’ Compact SUV

Toyota Motor Corp partially remodeled the “Lexus NX” compact SUV (sport utility vehicle).

New Electric Wheelchair Can Be Separated Into 3 Parts

Whill Inc, which develops and sells “personal mobilities,” announced April 13, 2017, that it has developed a new model, “Whill Model C electric wheelchair,” and will start shipment in June 2017 in Japan.

Personal mobilities developed by Whill fall into the category of electric wheelchair. But they can run over small bumps without causing discomfort. Also, they are compact and can change direction on the spot. The Model C electric wheelchair can travel as far as 16km (approx 9.94 miles) per charge.

“They can be seamlessly used anywhere, both indoors and outdoors, and enable users to move comfortably on a daily basis,” Whill CEO Satoshi Sugie said.

Unlike the Model A, the Model C electric wheelchair can be separated into three parts without using a tool and carried in a passenger car, etc, and its rechargeable battery can be detached.

Specifically, the Model C can be separated into the chair, driving part (rear wheels) and front wheels. For this feature, Whill employed a two-wheel-drive (2WD) mechanism in place of the four-wheel-drive (4WD) mechanism used for the Model A. The company newly developed an in-wheel motor in cooperation with Nidec Corp.

However, the Model C electric wheelchair can run over up to 5cm-high bumps while the Model A can run over up to 7.5cm-high bumps. And the length of the Model C is 985mm, which is about 10cm longer than that of the Model A (890mm). The length was increased to improve stability when the wheelchair is running down a hill, etc.

On the other hand, the 2WD mechanism eliminates the need for the part that drives the front wheels, reducing the weight by 64kg (from 116kg to 52kg).

The rechargeable battery of the Model C can be detached and charged in a room, etc. The battery of the Model A needs to be charged by connecting a charger to the main unit. Whill developed the new battery module in collaboration with Panasonic Corp.

New Subaru ‘XV’ Features Enhanced Safety, Driving Performance

Subaru Corp announced April 6, 2017, that it will release a fully-remodeled “Subaru XV” compact SUV (sport utility vehicle) May 24, 2017.

This time, Subaru employed the “Subaru Global Platform (SGP),” which is used for the new “Impreza” sports sedan released in October 2016, to improve collision safety.

The previous Subaru XV comes in two models: a 2.0L gasoline vehicle and a hybrid vehicle (HEV). On the other hand, the new XV is available as 2.0L and 1.6L gasoline vehicles. With the 1.6L model, Subaru aims to make the SUV more accessible and attract a wider range of users, Subaru President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga said.

The price of the new Subaru XV starts from ¥2,138,400 (approx US$19,298). The company aims to sell 2,200 units of the vehicle per month.

In addition to the collision safety improved by the employment of the SGP, Subaru employed (1) airbags for pedestrian protection, (2) the “Eyesight ver.3” driving support system and (3) “Active Torque Pedaling,” which prevents the rear part of the vehicle from moving outward by applying the brakes to inner wheels at the time of making a turn for all the models of the new Subaru XV as standard features.

As a result of those measures, the company won 199.7 points in the “JNCAP” assessment, which Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and National Agency for Automotive Safety & Victims’ Aid (NASVA) conducted for comparative evaluation of automobile safety performance. And it was awarded with the “Grand Prize of Collision Safety Performance Evaluation” for fiscal 2016.

The minimum ground clearance of the new XV is 200mm, which is 65mm higher than that of the Impreza using the same SGP. However, the SGP was designed so that it can be applied to tall SUVs. So, it has a small roll and an improved danger avoidance performance, Subaru said.

The new vehicle is the first Subaru XV vehicle equipped with the “X-Mode” control function, which enhances the capability to drive on rough roads. It is the same function used for the “Forester” mid-size SUV. It optimally controls the driving force of four wheels even on a slippery road, improving hill-climbing performance.

The power trains of the new Subaru XV is the same as those of the new Impreza: a 1.6L port-injection engine and a 2.0L direct-injection engine to be combined with a CVT (continuously variable transmission). The maximum output and maximum torque of the 1.6L engine are 85kW and 148N·m, respectively, while those of the 2.0L engine are 113kW and 196N·m, as in the case of the engines of the new Impreza. The fuel efficiencies of the 1.6L and 2.0L models are 16.2km/L (approx 38.1mpg in the US) and 16.0-16.4km/L, respectively, under the JC08 test mode.

The new XV measures 4,465 (L) x 1,800 (W) x 1,550mm (H, without roof rails), and its wheelbase is 2,670mm. Compared with the previous XV, the length, width and wheelbase increased by 15mm, 20mm and 30mm, respectively.
